Batik Workshop

€90.00
Sold Out

The workshop will take place at our new studio (Kallirois Parren 3, Athens)

6 people max

The workshop will start at 11.00 and last four hours (11.00-15.00), it includes all materials as well as snacks.

Each student will batik on 2 small cotton fabrics (20cm x 20cm) and one 100% cotton fabric (45cm x 45cm) which could then be sewn into a cushion or tote bag. You can also leave it to us in the studio and we can sew it in a pillow or tote bag for you for an extra charge of 10€.

Batik is a wax-resist technique that developed in Indonesia.

We will draw on cotton fabric using small copper tools called tjantings. The tjanting holds melted wax in it. The applied wax resists dyes, therefore wherever we draw, the colour will stay the original cotton fabric colour, whereas the rest will be dyed, using natural dyes.

There will be a choice of three natural dyes for you to choose. During the workshop we will also talk about natural dyeing, fabrics that can be used to batik, as well as mordanting. Students will have the opportunity to work on their design, adding layers, and therefore more dyes and colours.

After dyeing, we will remove the wax from the fabric.

Please bring a notebook with you.

The workshop is taught in Greek and/or English depending on the students.
